Marco’s Pizza led the pizza segment in unit growth with 437 locations.

The chains represented in the Second 100 Pizza rankings had a solid Latest Year, with improved aggregate sales that showcased the group’s emerging status, as four of the segment’s six chains saw sales growth.

Still, these smaller pizza chains — with U.S. systemwide sales tallying between $144.9 million and $378 million — suffered a swing from positive average estimated sales per unit, or ESPU, growth a year earlier to an average decline of less than 1 percent in the Latest Year. The shift possibly reflected broader market share gains from dominant national pizza chains like Domino’s Pizza and Pizza Hut, as well as the emerging fast-casual players like Pie Five Pizza Co. and  Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint.
