Twitter served The Wendy’s Co. an enormous nugget of good news Tuesday: A fan’s off-hand chicken nuggets mention officially hit the record for the most retweeted post in history.

With more than 3.4 million retweets as of Tuesday morning, the April 5 #NuggsForCarter post by 16-year-old Carter Wilkerson of Reno, Nev., passed the record set by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres’s Oscars Tweet of 2015.

Kurt Kane, Wendy’s chief concept and marketing officer, said in a statement Tuesday: “We knew that love for Wendy’s nuggets ran deep, but we didn’t expect Carter’s response to receive so much support on Twitter and set an all-time record.”

Wendy’s said it would stand by his request for free chicken nuggets for a year, even though he did not reach the initial hurdle of 18 million retweets.

“Consider it done on our end,” Kane said. “You’ve more than earned our respect … and the nuggets.”

Kane said Wendy’s would also make a $100,000 donation in Wilkerson’s name to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, which finds homes for children in foster care. Wilkerson was also urging his Twitter followers to donate to Pinocchio’s Moms on the Run, a Reno organization that supports women with breast cancer.

Twitter, for its part, devoted a blog post Tuesday to Wendy’s record.

“Wendy’s has a long history of leveraging Twitter to communicate with people,” the platform noted. “From the first-ever interactive March Madness Bracket run entirely through Twitter’s direct messages, to a live-streamed, behind-the-scenes look at how to make the Baconator featuring influencer Cody Johns, Wendy’s is consistently using their unique brand voice to connect with a wide audience.”

Wendy’s has partnered with Snapchat to create a special selfie filter that is unlocked with a purchase of a drink cup. For each selfie shared with the filter, Wendy’s said it would donate $5 to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, up to $500,000.

Wendy’s has more than 6,500 restaurants in 30 countries and U.S. territories.
