Jack in the Box is joining other quick-service chains in offering kids more healthful options for its Kid’s Combo Meals, company officials said Thursday.

The San Diego-based chain has introduced Chiquita Apple Bites with caramel as a free substitution for the combo meal, or as an a la carte side dish option.

“Jack in the Box offers a lot of variety with our Kid’s Combos, from grilled or crispy chicken strips, a grilled cheese sandwich and hamburger to low-fat milk, juice and fountain beverages,” said Tracy Dunn, director of menu marketing and promotions for Jack in the Box Inc., in a statement. “And now parents have the opportunity to include juicy, red apple slices in their child’s order with our new Chiquita Apple Bites with Caramel.”

The apple bites have 70 calories, including the caramel.

McDonald’s introduced its Apple Dippers, apple slices with caramel dipping sauce, in 2004. And Burger King introduced its French-fry-shaped Apple Fries in 2008.

Quick-service sandwich chain Subway also offers bagged apple slices in its stores.

Jack in the Box, which is based in San Diego, has more than 2,200 units.
