Trending this week: Chick-fil-A introduces new prototype

This week on Nation's Restaurant News the top story was NRN editors discuss restaurants’ marketing initiatives and Toast removing its controversial fee. Plus hear from Brian Sullivan, VP of culinary for Red Robin Gourmet Burgers & Brews

In other news, a drive-thru focused Chick-fil-A location will open in the Makiki area of Honolulu, Hawaii, July 27. The location, which does not provide dine-in services, will be operated by O’ahu-raised Zane Dydasco, and will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

According to a blog on the company’s website, the restaurant is custom designed to serve drive-thru guests via a dual-lane experience, though it will also include three walk-up windows for pedestrians. The restaurant will also offer third-party delivery “in the near future.”

Also, Toast has rolled back its decision to add a 99-cent fee to all orders of more than $10, just a month after it announced the decision, which was immediately greeted with complaints from restaurant operators.

“While we had the best of intentions — to keep costs low for our customers — that is not how the change was perceived by some of you. We made the wrong decision and following a careful review, including the additional feedback we received, the fee will be removed from our Toast digital ordering channels.
