McDonald’s signature breakfast offering, the Egg McMuffin, is turning 50 this year, and to celebrate, the chain is launching bagel sandwiches nationwide for the first time ever. The bagel lineup includes bacon, egg, and cheese, or steak, egg, and cheese.

Also, for Egg McMuffin Day on March 2, the chain is offering the item or the Sausage McMuffin with Egg breakfast sandwich for $1, exclusively through the McDonald’s app. Finally, from March 3-March 30, McDonald’s will offer a buy-one-get-one Sausage McMuffin with Egg when making a McDelivery order in the app.

"At McDonald's, breakfast isn't just a meal, it's a cherished tradition and cornerstone of our brand," McDonald's USA president Joe Erlinger said in a statement. "Every morning when we open our doors, we are a breakfast restaurant. Whether it’s my personal favorite, the Egg McMuffin, or our crispy Hash Browns, fluffy hotcakes, or sweet and savory McGriddles, we’re all about giving our customers the best start to their day. Our fans know they can always count on us for a one-of-a-kind breakfast experience, anchored in great value and high-quality ingredients."

According to the company, the popular Egg McMuffin was created by Herb Peterson, a franchisee in Santa Barbara, California, who presented the concept to founder Ray Croc in 1971. The idea was to create a portable Eggs Benedict.

“When I watched my father introduce this idea to Ray Kroc, we could not have anticipated it would become the foundation for the renowned McDonald’s breakfast menu,” Peterson’s son and McDonald’s Owner/Operator David Peterson said in a statement. “It’s been remarkable to see people embrace this innovation over the last five decades, and now we get to share that heritage with a new generation of breakfast fans.”

McDonald’s will celebrate the milestone anniversary of its breakfast all year with a national campaign.

Krispy Kreme partnership expands

The chain also announced today that its partnership with Krispy Kreme has expanded to New York City, joining other major cities such as Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and Louisville, in offering the chain’s signature doughnuts. By the end of this year, more than half of all McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. will offer the doughnuts, with nationwide availability by the end of 2026.
