Consumer penny pinching not yet a thing of the past

Nearly every morning on the way to work, I stop by what I think is the perfect New York deli to grab breakfast.
The place is ideal. They know your name, they know your order, and it’s quick. There’s even one of those penny dishes at the counter: “Need a penny, take a penny. Have a penny, leave a penny.” It helps when your bill comes to $6.03 or other annoying totals that make you reach for another dollar when you don’t have change.
The penny dish is nearly always empty.
“Even pennies matter today,” the owner Larry said, when I asked him why customers aren’t dropping their change.
