Company warns on weather-related sales declines in first quarter

Panera Bread Co. reported on Monday that profit increased 5.1 percent in Dec. 31-ended fourth quarter, with net income rising to $54.2 million compared to $51.6 million in the prior-year period. The St. Louis, Mo.-based company, which owns and franchises 1,777 bakery-cafes, said systemwide same-store sales rose 1.1 percent during the quarter.

Panera said in its earnings press release that same-store sales at company-owned units fell about 2.2 percent in the first 48 days of the first quarter, blaming severe weather for fewer transactions.

The company opened 133 new bakery-cafes in fiscal 2013.

NET INCOME

Result: $54.2 million, or $1.96 per share
% Increase: 5.1% (from $51.6 million, or $1.75 per share)

REVENUE

Result: $661.7 million
% Increase: 15.8% (from $571.5 million)

SAME-STORE SALES

% Increase systemwide: 1.1%


% Increase at company-owned units: 1.7%


% Increase at franchised units: 0.5%
