Chipotle Mexican Grill’s meteoric rise among the ranks of the country’s largest restaurant chains has been fueled in large part by its ability to serve a rapidly growing number of customers inside a relatively small box.

In the Top 100 Latest Year, Chipotle’s estimated sales per unit, or ESPU, grew 13.6 percent — the fastest rate of growth among the largest 100 restaurant chains. Its ESPU in the Latest Year totaled $2.4 million, roughly the same as the Casual-Dining chain O’Charley’s.

Chipotle now finds itself on the cusp of a key milestone: Surpassing the unit volume of McDonald’s. Both the struggling burger brand and the skyrocketing burrito brand of course once shared a parent company in McDonald’s Corp., making it all the more dramatic...
