There’s a cult of chicken — select Chicken chains whose customers are obsessively devoted to them — and it’s helping to drive expansion in the Chicken segment, which grew total U.S. systemwide sales to $19.9 billion in the Latest Year, from $17.9 billion in the Preceding Year. 

Leading the flock is Chick-fil-A, which retains its position as the biggest Chicken chain in the U.S. in terms of systemwide sales, with an impressive 18.1-percent growth in sales. In addition, the chain posted 11.7-percent growth in estimated sales per unit, or ESPU, in the Latest Year.

Contributing to the chain’s success is most certainly its “raving fans,” a segment of its customers who visit the chain multiple times a month and who are known to be so devoted to ...
