Lawmakers catapulted the minimum wage back into the public debate earlier this year, resurrecting an issue that could increase the pressure restaurants’ labor costs already exert on profitability.

The national conversation about the minimum wage resurfaced Feb. 12 during President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, when he called for the federal minimum wage to rise from $7.25 per hour to $9 per hour and then to be indexed to inflation. The president did not request any new provision for the federal tipped minimum wage, which has been $2.13 per hour since 1991.
