ANN ARBOR Mich. Domino's Pizza is celebrating its 48th anniversary today by offering a large four-topping pizza for $8.

The one-day offer is available only through online orders with participating stores, Domino's said.

"We are proud to be celebrating Domino's 48th birthday," David Brandon, chairman and chief executive, said. "We would like to thank our customers for keeping Domino's Pizza the recognized leader in pizza delivery."

Domino's was founded in 1960 when Tom Monaghan and his brother borrowed $500 to purchase a DomiNick's pizza store in Ypsilanti, Mich., according to the company's website. Monaghan eventually gained sole ownership of the store and in 1965 renamed it Domino's Pizza. The first franchised branch debuted two years later. Domino's today operates or franchises 8,726 units worldwide. Domino's Pizza Inc. is based in Ann Arbor.
