CHICAGO The Chicago City Council on Wednesday repealed its ban on the sale of foie gras at restaurants and elsewhere in the city. By a vote of 37-6, the council overturned the ban, which had received worldwide ridicule in food circles.

Mayor Richard M. Daley brought a bill to repeal the ban, which had been languishing in committee, to the floor for a vote at the urging of Alderman Thomas Tunney, who co-owns Ann Sather’s restaurants here.

Last year, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Illinois Restaurant Association that challenged the ban.

Some white tablecloth restaurateurs here, including Didier Durand of Cyrano’s Bistrot & Wine Bar, who grew up in France’s leading foie gras-producing region, are planning celebrations to mark the occasion.
