DALLAS Campero USA Corp., the affiliate of the Guatemalan-based chain that has 36 Pollo Campero chicken restaurants in the United States, is testing grilled chicken at its corporate store in Dallas.

The chain, which is known for its marinated and breaded fried chicken, is seeking a menu item to broaden its appeal among health-conscious people, said Roberto Denegri, president and chief operating officer of Campero USA.

There are no plans yet to expand the test of the grilled chicken to other markets or stores, executives said.

Campero USA recently signed an agreement with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to begin opening stores in the big-box retailer’s outlets in 2008.
