Nation’s Restaurants News presents the 2020 Top 200 largest restaurant chains: market share

Where U.S. restaurant segments rank based on market share

In addition to sizing up the largest restaurant brands, the annual Top 200 report also reveals key market share shifts going on among the largest brands.

The report takes a look at which restaurant segments are generating the largest share of the Top 200’s $313.5 billion dollars in Latest-Year sales, as well as which are gaining ground against competitors — and which are not.

The Limited Service/Burger segment again represented the largest share of Top 200 sales, at 28.3%, fueled largely by the sheer size of McDonald’s. It was followed by the Casual Dining segment — which boasts 61 chains — at 15.5%, and Beverage-Snack at 11.7%.

Of the 12 segments analyzed in the Top 200, eight saw their share of Top 200 sales increase in the Latest Year. They were: Chicken, Beverage-Snack, Limited Service/Mexican, Limited Service/Burger, C-store, Bakery-Cafe, Limited Service/Specialty and In-Store. The remaining four — Casual Dining, Limited Service/Sandwich, Family Dining and Pizza — all saw their Top 200 market share decline, even as Pizza and LSR/Sandwich pushed their total segment sales higher.
