Ranch water, a refreshing blend of tequila, lime, and sparkling water, is believed to have originated in Texas in the 1960s but has only recently gained huge popularity nationwide thanks to consumers' increasing love of tequila (now the top-selling spirit, having surpassed vodka), seltzer water and “better for you” drinks.
Ranch water grew on menus on the heels of the astronomical growth of hard seltzer, but with generally slightly fewer calories and a number of canned options readily available, the drink is heading for an extended boom on menus across the country.
Market research firm Datassential reports that ranch water is found on 1.4% of U.S. menus, up 6796% over the past four years.
