Seeing light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, Dine Brands Global parent CEO John Peyton on Thursday unveiled “audacious” plans for ramping up long-term growth for Applebee’s and IHOP with new restaurants, virtual brands and ghost kitchens in the works.
Peyton said the company sees a path for Applebee’s franchisees to return to net unit growth in 2023 and beyond, and for IHOP operators to double its historic growth from about 40 units per year to about 80. After years of underperforming units closing, the return to net growth was expected before the pandemic threw a wrench into development plans.
