Ruth’s Hospitality Group Inc. saw same-store sales at company stores increase 1.3 percent in the second quarter despite a .1 percent downturn in restaurant visits.

Comp sales were driven by an average check increase of 1.4 percent, and strong sales during Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

During the quarter, restaurants abroad took a hit. Same-store sales for franchise stores increased 1.3 percent, but that number was dragged down by slumping sales in Asia and Canada. International franchise comps were down 7 percent, while U.S. franchise restaurants saw same-store sales increase 3 percent.

Net income jumped to $9.6 million, compared to $7.8 million in the same quarter last year.

On Friday, Cheryl Henry assumed the role of CEO.

In early June, the Winter Park, Fla.-based steakhouse operator announced her appointment. She replaces Michael O’Donnell, who has been CEO since 2008. O’Donnell is now executive chairman.

Henry said the company will continue to focus on the brand experience and moving ahead with store remodels. To date, the company has remodeled about 28-29 stores, she said.

“I can’t express the importance of developing the brand experience,” she said.

O’Donnell said Ruth’s Chris is well-positioned for continued success under Henry, who has designed and implemented several successful strategies as president and COO.  “I remain extremely confident in the future of the company, and look forward to supporting Cheryl in my new role as Executive Chairman,” O’Donnell said in a statement.

As he finished his last conference call as host, his final remarks were: “It’s a great day to go out and eat steak Ruth’s Chris.”
