Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc. improved same-stores sales in its latest quarter by focusing less on “deal chasers” and improving its operational efficiencies for both dine-in and delivery customers.

That led to a profit of $1 million for the second quarter ended July 14, up from a net loss of $1.9 million for the same period a year ago. Same-store sales decreased 1.5% for the quarter. That decline was an improvement from the first quarter, where comparable restaurant sales were down 3.3%, chief financial officer Lynn Schweinfurth told investors Friday.

Still, the Greenwood Village, Colo.-based casual-dining chain continues to be plagued by declining visits. Guest counts in the quarter dropped 6.4%, which was partially offset by a 4.9% incr...
