A Burger King franchisee has opened a co-branded location that includes a Friendly’s Scoop Shop outlet, with a second planned for later this year.

Burger King franchisee Joe Anghelone, owner of Georgetowne Ventures of Freehold, N.J., said he hopes the dual-branded location will maximize the efficiencies of the building. Georgetowne Ventures operates 14 Burger King units.

The new concept opened in Jackson, N.J., in late December and features a limited ice cream menu from Friendly’s, including the family-dining chain’s signature Fribbles and Friend-z’s, shakes, ice cream cones and sundaes.

Friendly’s officials said the test offers an expansion opportunity for the 387-unit Wilbraham, Mass.-based chain, which emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month.

“We’re excited to roll out our new Friendly’s Scoop concept,” said Jim Sullivan, Friendly Ice Cream Corp.’s chief development officer, in a statement. “Our company’s focus has always been to take the Friendly’s brand and our delicious ice cream products to the consumer and this concept is a way to expand on that.”

A Burger King spokeswoman declined to comment on the co-branding move.

Friendly’s also last year debuted a new fast-casual Friendly’s Express variant, with counter service and a streamlined menu.
