Tech Tracker: How digital tech is capitalizing on the hot restaurant reservations market
Tock and Google now offer experience reservations; Diibs launches as a platform for bidding on last-minute reservations
New feature comes with freebie: large chips and guacamole; the company is also throwing another TikTok contest with a reward of free burritos for a year
Chipotle Mexican Grill, widely known in the industry as having one of the best apps, has added a “Group Order” button on its digital channels.
The new ordering feature, which is common on third-party delivery apps, allows a customer to start an order, then share a link to someone else who can then add-on to the order. Available on the fast-casual chain’s direct-ordering channels (app or website), group orders can be made for pickup or delivery.
The delivery must be made to one address.
To celebrate the new feature, the company is hosting a #ChipotleSponsorUs contest. The chain will reward five families or small friend groups free burritos for a year when they showcase why they should be sponsored by Chipotle on TikTok. The brand, through Sept. 13, is offering a free large chips and large guacamole to celebrate the introduction of the new group ordering feature. To get the freebie, enter the promo code “4FAMILY” at checkout. Customers must order four or more entrées to be eligible.
During the pandemic, Chipotle has seen digital sales reach record levels.
For the quarter ended June 30, digital sales increased 216.3% to $829 million. That broke the previous quarter’s record of $372 million. Digital sales accounted for 60.7% of sales. Digital sales are almost equally split between order-ahead and delivery.
The company’s loyalty program has about 15 million members. Chipotle operates more than 2,650 restaurants.
