After a tough year of “up-and-down” staffing challenges, Chipotle Mexican Grill is making investments that have stabilized the chain’s labor force and will help support accelerated plans for growth.

Reporting stellar fourth-quarter and full-year results on Tuesday, Chipotle chair and CEO Brian Niccol highlighted how the company is taking steps to ensure restaurants have proper staffing. Last year, Chipotle — like many restaurant chains — at times had to throttle digital and delivery orders and alter operating hours when restaurants were understaffed.

On Tuesday, Niccol said the chain has made “tremendous progress” and now fewer than 2% of the chain’s 2,950 restaurants are having challenges with staffing. But there is more work to do, he sa...
