Michael Coyne, who acted as interim CEO at Potbelly Corp. for six months last year, is resigning from his position as the chain’s CFO.

Coyne’s last day at the Chicago-based company will be Sept. 21. He is leaving to take on “a senior leadership position with another company,” Potbelly said in a statement. The chain declined Tuesday to name the company.

Potbelly said it has launched a search for the brand’s next CFO.

“Potbelly has a strong financial team in place that will continue to support the company's strategy during the search process,” the company said in a statement released on Friday.

Alan Johnson, who was named CEO last December, complimented Coyne for his work as the company’s CFO and as interim CEO. Coyne, who previously held executive positions at Sears, Sears Holdings, and CNA Financial Corp., has been with Potbelly since 2015. He was interim CEO at Potbelly for six months.

“Mike has been extremely helpful to me during my transition to leading Potbelly, and I want to personally express my gratitude for his work and contribution. Mike will be assisting as we transition to a new CFO. I wish Mike nothing but the best in his new position,” Johnson said in a statement.

Coyne said his “time and experience at Potbelly has been tremendous.”

“I have worked with great people in an absolutely unique culture. I have especially enjoyed working with Alan as he has taken a fresh strategic look at the business. I look forward to seeing Potbelly execute on the long-term strategy we have put in place.”
