Denver Qdoba Mexican Grill, a 373-unit fast-casual burrito chain based here, is negotiating leases to open company-owned restaurants in New York City this fall, a company spokeswoman said.

The move is an attempt to help build the market for its franchisee, Madalex LLC, which operates three units in New York City — one in Manhattan and two in Queens.

Rival Chipotle Mexican Grill, which does not franchise any of its more than 600 units, operates 18 restaurants in New York City. Chipotle is also based in Denver.

Madalex’s main partners are Scott Edelstein and Bob Feldman.
