SAN DIEGO Jack in the Box is adding another cheese-filled item to the menu this summer with the introduction of its Cheesy Macaroni Bites, the company said Monday

The fried wedges of macaroni and cheese will be sold for a suggested $1.69 for three pieces and $2.99 for six pieces at participating restaurants.

The 2,100-unit Jack in the Box is the latest chain to experiment with hand-held variations on the comfort food favorite. Sonic Drive-In has offered Mac & Cheese Bites as a limited-time offer, and a similar item is on the menus at the Cheesecake Factory and T.G.I. Friday's casual-dining chains.

Burger King has gone a more tradition route, offering a 4-ounce bowl of macaroni cheese as part of its revamped kids' meal, which also features Apple Fries and milk.

Earlier this month, Jack in the Box debuted the value-priced Nacho Cheese Burger and Nacho Cheese Chicken Sandwich. The sandwiches, which both feature nacho cheese sauce and sliced jalapenos, sell for $1.29 each.
