Subway will be closing U.S. restaurants early on July 12 for the next-day debut of its ‘Eat Fresh Refresh’ menu updates and new digital offerings, the company said Tuesday.

The Milford, Conn.-based sandwich franchisor is accompanying what it calls one of “the biggest changes in the brand’s history” with a sandwich giveaway as it updates bread recipes, offers new toppings and returns proteins like roasted chicken and roast beef to the menu.

The brand is also updating its Subway App with a new dashboard, improved ordering flow and insight into out-of-stock items.

“More than 10,000 Subway restaurants across the country will close at 6 p.m. local time for Sandwich Artists to refresh and get ready for the Eat Fresh Refresh launch,” the company said. When restaurants open on July 13, participating Subways will give away — from 10 a.m. to noon local time — a free six-inch Turkey Cali Fresh, a new sandwich, upon request.

“Subway has been serving freshly made, customizable and better-for-you sandwiches for more than 50 years, and we wanted to give our guests more new and improved flavors,” said Trevor Haynes, Subway’s president for North America, in a statement.  “Our new culinary team is delivering monumental updates to the entire core menu.”

Among the new sauces, breads and proteins that will debut July 13, guests will be new recipes for the Artisan Italian and Hearty Multigrain breads, deli-thin sliced ham and turkey, hickory-smoked bacon, smashed avocado, mozzarella and a MVP Parmesan Vinaigrette. New chef-recommended sandwiches include the Turkey Cali Fresh, Steak Cali Fresh and All-American Club.

While the company came under renewed scrutiny in June for its tuna, it said that protein would not change. “While many of Subway’s core protein choices were improved as part of the Eat Fresh Refresh, one ingredient that doesn’t need an upgrade is the Subway high-quality, premium tuna,” the company said in a news release.

The company said Subway Delivery is rolling out in select areas and allows guests to place delivery orders through the Subway App and Subway.com, “providing seamless access to new and refreshed menu items.”

Subway has nearly 40,000 restaurants in 100 countries.
