Last year, when Mark King walked into Greg Creed’s Dallas office to interview for the top job at Taco Bell, the shoe and golf equipment executive believed his experience would be a great fit for the culture-leading Yum Brands division.

The former president of Adidas Group North America spent his career teaching employees to think outside the box, take risks and never be complacent. Those ideals matched Creed’s own philosophy.  

Yet, that ethos didn't nab King the job.

Ultimately, a pair of sneakers sealed the deal.

“I went in with my suit. No tie. I only wear Adidas shoes. I don't have one pair of dress shoes. Not one in my closet,” King said during a Thursday interview in his fifth floor office.
