The Wendy’s Co. on Aug. 22 will introduce an English muffin-based sandwich to its menu lineup, going head-to-head with McDonald’s Egg McMuffin.

The Dublin, Ohio-based burger brand since spring has promoted its “bookend” dayparts of breakfast and late night to expand sales.

The English muffin sandwich will be available with bacon or sausage, the company said, and it took more than a year and half of development. It features a spread of brown butter with fresh black pepper. It is topped with an egg and bacon or sausage.

Wendy’s since spring has promoted its “bookend” dayparts of breakfast and late night to expand sales.

John Li, Wendy’s global vice president of culinary innovation, said in a statement: “We tested 60 variations of our English Muffin Sandwiches before we landed on these light and fluffy English muffins made with a touch of honey and topped with a savory buttery spread, fresh cracked eggs and delicious bacon or sausage for the perfect harmony of breakfast flavors.”

The new item will be available during Wendy’s breakfast hours. Customers can redeem $2 off any breakfast combination in the smartphone app Aug. 22 through Sept 3, the company said.

The muffin sandwich joins other breakfast items such as Breakfast Baconator, Homestyle French Toast Sticks and a just introduced Frosty Cream Cold Brew.

On a second-quarter earnings call Aug. 9, Wendy’s CEO Todd Penegor said the company experienced the highest quarterly breakfast sales volumes of all time, supported by its $3 croissant promotion launched in late March.

Wendy’s, founded in 1969, has about 7,000 restaurants worldwide.
