Arby’s Restaurant Group Inc. has promoted John Bowie, senior vice president of operations, to chief operating officer, the company said Tuesday.

Bowie will replace George Condos, a 35-year industry veteran, who announced his retirement. The company gave Condos credit for improving operating standards and the financial performance of company and franchise locations.

“George is an accomplished operations leader in the restaurant industry and he made an indelible impact on the turnaround of the Arby’s brand in the last several years,” CEO Paul Brown said in a statement. “We were very fortunate to have him at Arby’s as he helped to build a best-in-class operations team.”

Bowie will assume responsibilities as COO on March 30, at which point Condos will remain with Arby’s as a consultant through the end of the year.

“John is taking the reigns of an operations team that has been set up for continued success,” Brown said. “As the leader of our operations in the East Region, John already has a very strong track record of success. I’m looking forward to working more closely with him in his new leadership role.”

Bowie joined Arby’s in 2013, and has worked in the restaurant industry for more than 20 years. He had previously been president of U.S. operations for Church’s Chicken, and has held senior operations and marketing roles with Friendly’s Ice Cream Corp. and Wendy’s International Inc.

Bowie is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and has an MBA from Duke University.
