DUBLIN Ohio Wendy’s is bringing back what it calls one of its best-selling promotional items, the Baconator double burger, in a new spicy version.

The updated version features two burger patties and six strips of bacon, like the original Baconator, but it is also garnished with jalapenos and two slices of Pepper Jack cheese. The Spicy Baconator will be rolled out systemwide this week and offered through the middle of April, according to franchisor Wendy’s International Inc.

The company said the 6,250-unit chain has sold more than 68 million Baconators since the sandwich was introduced last June. “It is one of Wendy’s most successful new product introductions in recent years,” the quick-service giant said in a press release.

The new Baconator is the latest in a smattering of spicy products to be introduced in recent weeks by quick-service chains. The Quiznos sandwich chain is promoting a spicy version of its prime rib sandwich. The Chick-fil-A grilled-chicken chain is testing a spicy chicken sandwich at 15 stores in Jacksonville, Fla. And Arby’s has resurrected its Spicy Cajun Fish Sandwich as a Lenten promotional item.
