MIAMI Heartland Food Corp. has purchased 20 Ontario restaurants from Burger King Corp.’s Canadian subsidiaries and acquired 14 other previously franchised Burger King units in Ontario.

Burger King said the sale was part of its “ongoing strategic portfolio management.” Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Chuck Fallon, president of Burger King’s North America division, said, “As our third largest North American franchisee for the Burger King brand, Heartland Food Corp. will continue to penetrate the Canada market by developing new restaurants in the upcoming years.”

With the addition of the 34 Canadian restaurants, Heartland Food of Downers Grove, Ill., now owns 257 Burger King units. Its 223 U.S. restaurants are in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Steve Wiborg, president and chief executive of Heartland, said, “We are very excited about expanding our presence internationally and our decision to help grow the Burger King brand in Ontario.”

Heartland Food Corp was named by Nation's Restaurant News magazine as the “2006 Franchisee Star Award.”

Burger King has more than 11,800 restaurants in the United States and 74 nations and territories.
