ALHAMBRA Calif. Rebecca Black has been promoted to vice president of operations and franchise support for Shakey’s USA, officials announced Tuesday.

Black, who joined Shakey’s five years ago, was previously senior director of operations and franchise support.

Founded 55 years ago, the fast-casual pizza-and-entertainment concept is attempting a revitalization, and Black is charged with increasing franchise sales and making the chain more efficient and consumer friendly.

“This is a very exciting time for us and I am very proud to be part of the team responsible for bringing Shakey’s back,” said Black. “We will double in size over the next few years, with an ultimate goal of 1,000 units in 10 years.”

The 55-unit Shakey’s chain ended 2008 with same-store sales up 8 percent, Black said. “While others are talking about burning the furniture, we’re asking, ‘Where’s our next location going to be?’”

Based in Alhambra, Shakey’s is scheduled to add eight locations this year, six of which will be operated by franchisees.
