HOUSTON The Luby's Inc. cafeteria chain is bringing its most-popular menu offering, the “Lu Ann,” to life.

For decades, Lu Ann has been the name of Luby’s Lu Ann Platter, which includes a half-portion entree, two vegetables and a roll for around $7.99, depending on the location. Now the chain has introduced a real-life Lu Ann, with red bouffant Southern hair, who joins the pantheon of restaurant “spokescharacters” such as KFC’s Colonel Sanders, McDonald’s Ronald and even Burger King’s King.

"Luby's is thrilled to introduce the beloved Lu Ann to the communities that we serve,” said Chris Pappas, Luby’s chief executive.

During December, Luby’s said Lu Ann will be out and about shopping, picnicking and attending holiday events. Those who spot Lu Ann will be rewarded with a chance to win a $1,000 holiday shopping spree. Fans can check Lu Ann’s whereabouts at www.lubys.com.

Luby’s operates 96 restaurants, mostly in Texas.
