NEW YORK New York’s Magnolia Bakery was famous for its cupcakes before Carrie Bradshaw of “Sex and the City” fame brought its pink frosted onto the silver screen. Now Magnolia is coming to Hollywood with a location scheduled to open in Los Angeles.

Officials on Friday would not disclose the exact location, but confirmed that an LA unit is scheduled to open in the fall. The unit will be the bakery concept’s first outside New York, where Magnolia has three outlets.

Magnolia Bakery was founded in New York’s Greenwich Village in 1996 by Jennifer Appel and Allysa Torey. The company was bought in 2006 by Steve and Tyra Abrams.

Some contend that Magnolia Bakery was Ground Zero for the gourmet cupcake craze that has spawned cupcake outlets in most major cities, including chains such as Sprinkles — which has a loyal following in Los Angeles — and Crumbs.

New York’s City Bakery recently attempted its first West Coast outlet in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood, but it closed in the spring. Owner Maury Rubin reportedly plans to open that company’s new Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery concept in West Hollywood this fall. Birdbath is a 700-square-foot eco-focused bakery offering takeout lunches, and featuring organic and locally sourced fare.
