SEATTLE Starbucks Corp. on Tuesday unveiled the list of close to 200 underperforming company-operated stores across the United States scheduled to close by the end of the fiscal year, including 76 in California.

The planned closures were announced in January as part of ongoing cost-cutting measures in light of declining store traffic throughout the more than 16,000-unit chain. Last year, the company said it would close 660 stores in the United States and Australia, all of which have closed or are in the process of closing, Starbucks officials said Wednesday.

The 195 additional domestic units to close this year will be joined by another 100 international units that also are scheduled to be shuttered.

California, where soaring home foreclosure rates and high unemployment have taken their toll, will see the most store closures in the current round, with some stores closing as soon as the end of this month, officials said. At the end of the quarter ended Dec. 28, 2008, California had 1,773 Starbucks locations, more than any other state within the 7,138 units that comprise the domestic system.

Florida and Nevada, two other states that have been hit hard by the recession, will each lose 15 Starbucks, and Georgia will lose 12. Maryland, New York and Texas will each lose seven stores. Five Starbucks locations will close in each of the states of Connecticut, Hawaii and Virginia.

Both Illinois and Arizona will see four Starbucks locations close; and Colorado, the District of Columbia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio, Tennessee, Utah and Washington state will each lose two.

One Starbucks is designated for closure in each of the states of Alabama, Idaho, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Wyoming.
