CHICAGO Potbelly Sandwich Works has introduced a line of lower-priced, lower-calorie menu items and reportedly raised the prices on its original sandwiches.

The 200-unit Potbelly said its Skinny Sandwiches are made with thinly sliced bread and less meat and cheese than the its regular sandwiches. Priced at $4 each, the Skinny Sandwiches include the Hammie, made with ham and Swiss cheese; the TKY, which features turkey and Swiss; and the Mushroom Melt, made with mushrooms, Swiss, American and provolone cheeses.

Potbelly said the Skinny Sandwiches, which contain 25-percent less fat and 25-percent fewer calories than its regular sandwiches, were a response to customer demand for less-filling sandwiches.

To offset rising costs, the chain reportedly is increasing the price of its original 7-inch and 9-inch sandwiches from $4.19 to $4.50 and from $5.40 to $5.80, respectively. However, those sandwiches would also contain more meat and cheese, according to the report by Crain's Chicago Business.
