At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, one of the most successful segments was undoubtedly pizza, particularly larger chains like Papa John’s and Domino’s. Both of those companies saw double digit year-over-year sales increases in 2020, at 19% and 11%, respectively, according to Top 500 data. 

In Domino’s case, part of what gave it an edge was how easily pizza transitioned to shuttered dining rooms. Pizza delivery was already one step ahead of the game, and Domino’s had been developing its delivery and takeout technology (without third-party delivery) for years.
