In an era of social distancing, restaurant companies that invested heavily in ghost kitchens and loyalty programs are feeling fortuitous during the crisis.

Industry watchers say delivery-minded chains with robust branded apps also are on firmer ground, even as dine-in restrictions lift across the United States. 

“More consumers will be ordering delivery and using delivery-only concepts because of the convenience and now for perceived safety reasons with social distancing,” said Tim Powell, managing principal at industry consultancy Foodservice IP in Chicago.

When the coronavirus pandemic shut down dine-in at restaurants in March, Chipotle Mexican Grill began referring to its second-make lines as Delivery Kitchens.
