The annual Nation’s Restaurant News analysis of foodservice revenue and growth begins to show the coronavirus pandemic’s impact, but also a year of mergers and acquisitions

Year-over-year growth in aggregate reported or estimated U.S. foodservice revenue for the Top 100 Companies tracked by Nation’s Restaurant News fell by nearly half in their latest completed fiscal years — even before the impact of the coronavirus pandemic was felt by most.

The 2020 NRN Top 100 Companies roster generated $176.1 billion in Latest-Year revenue from their domestic corporate-owned-restaurant sales and franchising operations, which was up 4.7% from the $168.2 billion posted by those same industry players in the Preceding Year, when annual growth was 9.2%.

On average, the Top 100 Companies roster saw Latest-Year revenue growth of 3.2% compared with an average Preceding-Year increase of 16.4%.
