Dine Brands Global Inc. has named Vance Chang its chief financial officer, effective June 14, 2021, the parent company of IHOP and Applebee’s neighborhood Grill & Bar, said Wednesday.

It also has named Allison Hall, who has served as interim CFO since January following the December resignation of Thomas Song, as senior vice president and chief accounting officer.

Vance most recently was CFO of Exer Urgent Care, and before that he held the same position at Yogaworks. He also has held positions at Pressed Juicery, Moelis & Company, Oracle and Deloitte & Touche. He received a degree in accounting from the University of Washington and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Hall has worked at Dine Brands for 13 years, having joined the company as assistant controller in 2007

“After a rigorous search process, I’m excited to welcome Vance to Dine Brands,” CEO John Peyton said in a press release announcing the appointments. “He is a high-impact executive who brings a compelling blend of strategic and collaborative leadership abilities. Vance will be an asset to our business as we continue on a recovery trajectory and focus on growth across every facet of our business.”

Dine Brands reported a strong quarter in the first three months of 2021, although sales are not yet back to pre-pandemic levels

With Vance and Allison at the helm of our financial organization, I look forward to our continued success together as we evolve our business and accelerate our momentum in support of our restaurants and franchisees around the globe.”

Dine Brands Global is based in Glendale, Calif. As of March 31, 2021, there were 1,720 IHOP locations and 1,697 Applebee’s.

A magna cum laude graduate of Tufts University in Medford, Mass., with a bachelor’s degree in history, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Thorn also studied traditional French cooking at Le Cordon Bleu Ecole de Cuisine in Paris. He spent his junior year of college in China, studying Chinese language, history and culture for a semester each at Nanjing University and Beijing University. While in Beijing, he also worked for ABC News during the protests and ultimate crackdown in and around Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Thorn’s monthly column in Nation’s Restaurant News won the 2006 Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award for best staff-written editorial or opinion column.

He served as president of the International Foodservice Editorial Council, or IFEC, in 2005.

Thorn wrote the entry on comfort food in the Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America, 2nd edition, published in 2012. He also wrote a history of plated desserts for the Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets, published in 2015.

He was inducted into the Disciples d’Escoffier in 2014.

A Colorado native originally from Denver, Thorn lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.
