Popeyes announces plans for franchise development in Italy

Parent Restaurant Brands International signs deal with Iberian master franchisee to open first location later this year

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Restaurant Brands Iberia, the parent of the master franchisees for Burger King Spain, Burger King Portugal, Popeyes Spain, and Tim Hortons Spain, have entered into a master franchise agreement to develop the Popeyes brand in Italy, the companies said Thursday.

Popeyes’ parent, Toronto-based Restaurant Brands International Inc., said the first Italian Popeyes restaurant, known for its Louisiana-inspired chicken menu, would open later this year.

“We’re very excited about growing the brand in Italy with RB Iberia, a long-term partner and strong operator,” said David Shear, RBI’s president of International, in a statement.

“We have set ambitious expansion plans for our iconic brand, and today’s news highlights our commitment to serving Popeyes bold Louisiana flavors to more guests around the world,” Shear said.

Gregorio Jiménez, chairman of RB Iberia, said: "Our company excels in managing master franchises, so we have a great business opportunity ahead of us, which will contribute to job creation in Italy and diversify the QSR market for our Mediterranean neighbor.”

The companies said RB Iberia is committed to providing guests with a digital experience, using personalization and the latest channels to serve guests.

This agreement marks a continuation of Popeyes expansion plan in Europe, with Popeyes restaurants already present in Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom,  Romania, France, and more recently in Poland and Czech Republic.

Popeyes, founded in 1972, has more than 4,300 restaurants in the United States and around the world. Restaurant Brands International also owns the Burger King, Tim Hortons, and Firehouse Subs brands.
