DETROIT Calling it a “economic stimulus package” for downtown operators, officials of the rapid-transit Detroit People Mover system have turned loose a promotional “dining car” wrapped from cab to back bumper with a decal-like covering that sports the names and logos of dozens of eateries.

The decorated car used in the elevated, 2.9-mile rail system built 30 to 40 feet above ground loops through the city’s downtown several hundred times a week, making it highly visible to passengers, pedestrians and high-rise workers and dwellers.

“With over 300 restaurants now operating in the Central Business District, we want to be sure people know what culinary adventures await them,” said DPM general manager, Barbara Hansen. “We have gathered logos from over 25 of them and placed them on one of our vehicles at no cost to the restaurants and hotels.”

Hansen said the concepts being promoted range from “very inexpensive spots like Tim Horton's to upscale dining places like Coach Insignia and everything in between.” All of the restaurants are within a short walk from one of the system’s thirteen stations.

Referring to one of the goals of the program, Hansen said, “We hope it helps convince people to stick around downtown and try new eating places instead of heading for the suburbs as soon as their workday is over."

Establishments included in the promotion include Andiamo Riverfront, Mosaic, Fishbone's, Tom's Oyster Bar, Detroit Fish Market, Opus One, Detroit's Breakfast House, Seldom Blues, Cheli's Chili Bar and Detroit Beer Company. Also featured are Hard Rock Cafe, Elwood Bar & Grill, Hockeytown Cafe, Vicente's Cuban Cuisine, Bistro 555, Pappy's Sports Bar and Rice Bowl Fresh Asian Kitchen.
