This week on Nation's Restaurant News the top story was Twin Peaks franchisee in Florida files for bankruptcy; faces $12 million litigation claim. DMD Ventures — a Davie, Fla.-based franchisee of Twin Peaks, Papa Johns, Candlewood Suites, and other non-hospitality ventures — has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company has filed simultaneous bankruptcy petitions for its two affiliated businesses, DMD Florida Development 2, LLC and DMD Florida Restaurant Groups C and D LLC, which own and operate separate Twin Peaks restaurants.
In other news, data indicate that the vast majority of people (fitness app Strava puts it at 80%) who resolve to eat more healthfully in the new year give up by the end of the second week. It seems like most chains have gotten that memo. Smoothie King is catering to the other 20% with a new lineup of nutrient-dense drinks, and Peet’s Coffee has added whey protein to some drinks, but other than that, there’s a whole lot of indulgence going on.
Also, Panera Brands announced Tuesday that José Alberto Dueñas has stepped down as CEO of the company, effective immediately. The St. Louis-based parent company to Panera Bread, Caribou Coffee, and Einstein Brands has named chief financial officer Paul Carbone as interim CEO while a search for a new long-term chief executive begins.
